Common Flange Types In The Oil And Gas Industry

A flange is a projecting collar or rim on a pipe for a pressure vessel. When you use it in combination with another flange, it can seal another pipe or pressure vessel. It is a reliable way to connect vessel or pipe systems. The four core standards of flanges are:

  • AWWA – used for waterwork
  • MSS – used for steel pipeline
  • API – used for large diameter carbon pipes
  • ANSI/ASME

Flanges are not a one-type-fits-all solution. However, matching the idle flange design of a piping system and intended usage will help to ensure the reliable operation of the said systems.

There are six different flange types. These are:

Weld neck flange

The flange is recognizable by its hub on the neck, designed to match the pipe’s inner side. A weld neck flange needs a butt weld for installation. The flange type is popular for pipe processing as it can withstand high temperatures and pressure. It also creates a reduction in turbulence and erosion.

Threaded flange

You can attach the flange without welding. It is often described as a screwed flange. The method works as both disadvantage and an advantage. The major drawback is that it can be prone to leaks, while you do not need a welder to attach it in the case of advantage. On the other hand, you can match the thread to the connecting pipes.

Socket weld flange

It is ideal for small pipe diameters in low-pressure systems and temperatures. The flange utilizes a socket weld joining in attaching the flange to the tube or pipe.

Slip-on flange

The slip-on flange is available in an extensive range of sizes and is helpful to accommodate a system with a significant rate flow throughout.

Lap joint flange

It connects to a like stub end to the pipe’s end. It is helpful in combination with a pressure vessel or sealable joint.

Blind flange

It is helpful to close the pipe ends, ensuring no leakage or flow.
